I know a lot of small business owners who try to do it all; from their taxes to their marketing material. The fact of the matter is that you can’t do it all.
The best piece of advice we received when we first opened our business was to do what we were good at and to hire professionals to do all the other stuff, and for the most part, we’ve followed this advice.
As it turns out, Ryan is good at designing and building furniture, and I am fairly good at telling the world that Ryan Schlaefer is amazing (aka marketing), so we make an excellent team on that count, but unfortunately, there’s a lot of stuff we don’t do well.
We’ve never even attempted to do our own taxes. We have both our business and personal tax returns done by a CPA, and I have no doubt whatsoever that this has saved us money over the years.
Our business is incorporated, and Ryan and I are employees of our company, therefore, Karen at The Profit Center of Loveland has been doing our payroll from the beginning. Also, in the beginning, we splurged on a state-of-the-art website that gave us a professional look right away.
Today, things have changed and we designed and built this website ourselves because in 2012, it’s a lot easier than it was in 2004. Plus, we decided we didn’t need all the bells and whistles, but in the beginning I think it was crucial that we presented a high-end, professional look.
We’ve also never skimped when it comes to using a professional photographer. Almost as soon as our doors opened, we teamed up with Bob and Heidi Whitney of Aspen Photo & Design. We appreciate Bob and Heidi because they make our furniture looking amazing, plus they are a husband/wife small business team also located in Loveland.
Heidi Kerr-Schlaefer is co-owner of Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture, Inc. She is also a full-time freelance writer and founder of HeidiTown.com.
