FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Two northern Colorado companies collaborate on beetle-kill furniture project.
Loveland, Colorado March 8, 2013 – Local furniture designer and manufacturer, Ryan Schlaefer, was contracted earlier this year to create multiple beetle-kill furniture pieces for Edge Optics in Fort Collins.
Edge Optics, LLC, is an eco-friendly, complete optical store featuring high-quality sport and fashion frames. Owners, Dr. Mason Bryant and Mindy Bryant made the conscious decision to utilize local artisans to outfit their store. They contracted with Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture to create multiple display cases and furniture pieces, crafted from Colorado beetle-kill wood.
Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture, Inc. is a high-end furniture design and manufacturing company that has been located in Loveland, Colorado since 2004. Ryan Schlaefer, a graduate of the Art Institute of Colorado, is an artist who creates functional furniture with an artistic flare.
Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture’s INSPIRO furniture line, featuring beetle-kill wood, is just one facet of the company. Schlaefer works with all types of woods, but years ago, when pine trees started to die all across Colorado, he was inspired to create a high-end line of beetle-kill furniture.
“At the time, no one was thinking of this wood as being ‘high-end.’ It was being used for flooring and trim, and rugged, log-home style furniture,” said Ryan Schlaefer. “I thought with a different kind of finish I could make this wood into high-end furniture, and I believe I’ve done that.”
When planning their new business, Edge Optics, the Bryants knew they wanted to support local, Colorado businesses.
“The local presence is what’s missing from businesses today,” said Mindy Bryant, co-owner of Edge Optics. “Outsourcing everything because it’s cheaper does not support our local economy. We decided to change that pattern and pay a little extra for the long term impact we have made by using local companies.”
Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture was one of many local companies Edge Optics – from artwork to metal work, they used local artisans to outfit their stylish and eco-friendly store at 706 S. College. The store opened at the end of February.
“I really appreciate that they decided to go with local artisans,” said Schlaefer. “Many people give lip service to buying local, but they seldom follow through because it is often times more expensive than going with foreign made products.”
